Assistant Rules
All assistants are expected to obey the General U.U.A and Assistant Rules.
There are some guidelines as well. These are optional, but we highly recommend them. (In some cases, continually failing to meet these guidelines may cause a violation of an Assistant rule.)
- If the minimal hour is up, and you are still helping someone out, continue to do so if you can.
- Only accept problems that you know won't stretch beyond what you have available for time. The less users left hanging, the better.
- If you must leave the U.U.A. channels, please be respectful and tell anyone depending on you that you are leaving, and how to get more help if required.
- To further expand on the above point, you should tell your user of any pauses so the user never feels pushed aside, such as while you do research or "briefly" leave your computer.
- You are given voice permissions in the #uua channel, but use them sparingly.
- Always expect that the user you are about to help is completely new to the Linux world. Guide users to each program you want them to use. Take your time describing each step, and be patient when the user does something "unrelated" or does not understand.
Becoming an Assistant
If you love to help Linux users solve problems, and you have lots of experience with Ubuntu, then apply to become an assistant to U.U.A.!
To apply, send an e-mail to javaJake (fun2program8@yahoo.com), with the following information.
Qualifying Experience
The following information will help us decide whether or not you qualify to be an assistant. We are looking for users who are experienced enough to know the answer or know how to find the answer.
- What are your nicknames in Linux groups in which you have helped people with Linux problems? This could include your IRC nickname.
- Provide links to particular forum posts, chat logs, or even bug reports that showcase your abilities.
- Tell us what you've done with Ubuntu on your own. Specifically, tell us about any problems you solved on your own, software you've played around with, or anything else that has increased your knowledge of the Ubuntu system.
- Have you used any other Linux distributions? What are the highlights of your experiences with them?
Public Information
The rest of this will not disqualify you from becoming an assistant. The purpose of these topics is to get you set up as an assistant. You'll notice this information is basically parallel with the personnel table above.
- Provide all the nick-names you plan on using while assisting, and indicate which will be your primary name. Please keep them to as few and similar as possible.
- Tell us what areas of expertise you feel are the best parts of your background in Linux.
- What times each week do you think you'll be available at? (We understand there are no guarantees here.)
